Novo Nordisk is working with Valo Health to identify potential new treatments for cardiometabolic conditions. If it proves to be a fruitful collaboration, the initial payment of $60 million will be just the beginning. 

American College of Cardiology President B. Hadley Wilson, MD, discussed why the ACC and other leading cardiology groups are so eager to create a new, independent medical board. This has been a long-term goal for many years, he said, and now it may become a reality. 

"We know that the cardiovascular community is ready for an independent, self-governed entity, and we are proud to develop this new board with cardiologists and cardiology organizations at the helm," ACC President B. Hadley Wilson, MD, said in a statement.

Cardiologist Martha Gulati, MD, lead author of the 2021 chest pain guidelines, explained how the document may have contributed to the rise of cardiac CT. "These guidelines have made it harder for people to push back and say you don't need this test," she said. 

In addition to the hefty fine, the New York physician has agreed to relinquish ownership of his cardiology practice after exchanging kickbacks for PET and SPECT referrals for more than a decade.

ASNC President President Mouaz Al-Mallah, MD, said nuclear cardiology needs to upgrade old imaging systems and embrace new technology to deliver better value for patients. 

Already approved for temperature management, the single-use ensoETM device is now cleared for another use: minimizing the risk of potentially fatal injuries to the patient's esophagus during radiofrequency ablation procedures. 

The 35-year-old cardiologist faces a total of 51 felony charges. He is scheduled to be arraigned on Oct. 6.
