Leapfrog names 90 hospitals tops for quality care

The Leapfrog Group released its list of top hospitals based on results from 1,324 facilities. Winners include 55 urban, 22 rural and 13 children’s hospitals.

The ranking is based on quality measures such as preventing medical errors, reducing mortality for high-risk procedures such as aortic valve replacement surgeries and reducing readmissions for patients treated for MIs, heart failure and pneumonia. Analysts look at practices such as the use of computerized physician order entry systems, intensive care unit staffing and publicly available safety and mortality data.

Hospitals voluntarily participate in the survey.

According to Leapfrog Group, the 2013 list includes 40 first-time winners. The complete list of 2013 and past winners is available here.
