Mayo teams with STMicroelectronics for CV patient monitoring system

STMicroelectronics, a semiconductor company, and the Mayo Clinic are collaborating on a new platform for remotely monitoring patients with chronic cardiovascular disease. The platform will seek to monitor person-specific data, physiological parameters, lifestyle influences and treatment choices.

Paul Friedman, MD, a cardiology consultant and specialist in cardiovascular electrophysiology at Mayo, said that an initial program of patient trials is underway.

The platform uses a combination of sensors, ultra-low-power microcontrollers and wireless modules and interfaces to provide information about the patient’s heart rate, breathing rate, physical activity and other measurements wirelessly obtained from external medical devices, according to the Geneva, Switzerland-based company.
