Cardiologists give thumbs up to Pfizer, Merck reps
Schering-Plough, AstraZeneca and Novartis rounded out the top five, finishing third, fourth and fifth, respectively.
Sales force rankings are calculated by combining a quality and familiarity score, SDI reported. The quality score is the average of physicians' ratings of their overall impression of a company's sales force on a 1 to 7 scale, with 7 representing superior performance. The familiarity score is the percentage of respondents who indicate that they are at least somewhat familiar with the company's sales force.
Among cardiologists, Merck's quality and familiarity scores both improved compared to 2008. In 2009, Merck's average quality score was 5.58, up from 5.40 in 2008. Merck's 2009 familiarity score was 100 percent (all cardiologists indicated some familiarity with the company), compared to 97 percent in 2008.
In addition to overall quality and familiarity, physicians rated sales forces based on five important attributes: product knowledge, sensitivity to time constraints, professional demeanor, provision of sufficient samples and unbiased product comparisons. Cardiologists' ranking of Merck improved from 2008 to 2009 in each attribute, with the largest jump, from sixth to second place, in product knowledge, according to the firm.
During the first 11 months of 2009, a Merck sales representative was most likely to discuss Vytorin or Zetia with cardiologists. These brands represented just over half of Merck's product discussions.
