In many ways, the field of electrophysiology is in its infancy, or at least approaching adolescence. The plethora of new drugs and technology and the ever-improving understanding of arrhythmias keeps EPs on the learning curve. Just last year, the Heart Rhythm Society released updated guidelines for lead extraction. It used to be that EPs would leave defective leads inside the patient, while implanting new leads. But that protocol is becoming increasingly unpopular as our understanding of infection improves.
