Walk this way: Robotic suit to help stroke patients recover movement
For stroke survivors, recovering physical abilities often involves relearning how to walk. To help, researchers at Boston University’s College of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences have developed an “exosuit” to support a patient’s movements.
The robotic suit features cables attaching a motor worn around the waist to fabric covering the lower leg.
“[We’re developing] smart technologies that aren’t just there for the person to use but can actually work in harmony with the person's movements, so that at the end of the day—this is not where we are now but where we want to be—that person just straps something on and walks out door like they never had a stroke,” Awad said.
