Cardiologist argues for combination therapy for stroke, heart attack—but is anyone listening?
Victor Gurewich, MD, has spent more than two decades trying to spread the word about what he sees as an effective, lifesaving treatment approach to heart attack and stroke. At 88 years old, the cardiologist is hoping to breakthrough soon—and a new clinical trial in Europe could help.
In a lengthy story by STAT, Gurewich details his combination therapy that uses two medications to break up clots. He argues this approach could quickly open blocked vessels, to improve outcomes for stroke patients with less risk, while giving heart attack patients more time to undergo angioplasty.
“It’s all pretty obvious,” Gurewich said of his approach, because that’s how clots are naturally dissolved in the body. “What’s not so obvious is why it’s ignored.”
