At least three patients in Los Angeles infected with bacteria after cardiac surgery
At least three patients in Los Angeles county had an infection after undergoing cardiac surgery, the Los Angeles Times reports.
All of the patients used the Stöckert 3T heater-cooler devices, which are used in 60 percent of open-heart surgeries. In October, the FDA and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned that some of the heater-cooler devices might have been contaminated during manufacturing and that patients exposed to the devices could be at risk for life-threatening infections.
The newspaper reported that Los Angeles County health officials spoke with 24 hospitals that used the Stöckert 3T heater-cooler devices. Two hospitals reported that patients had been infected after using the devices.
Liva Nova PLC manufactures the Stöckert 3T heater-cooler device.
