University of Kentucky sues newspaper over failed cardiology deal
The University of Kentucky filed a lawsuit against the Lexington Herald-Leader newspaper to avoid revealing information on a failed deal between the university and a cardiology company, the Herald-Leader reports.
The Kentucky attorney general’s office ruled earlier that the university had violated the state’s open records law when it refused to provide documents to attorney general Andy Beshear. Beshear wanted to decide if the University was exempt from disclosure under the law.
The Herald-Leader has requested a PowerPoint presentation that lawyer David Douglass gave to the university’s board of trustees regarding the Appalachian Heart Center in Hazard, Kentucky, as well as Douglass’s billing records and outside consultants’ reports on the clinic. The newspaper reported that the university paid $1 million to Douglass and $4 million to the federal government related to the clinic’s billing problems.
