A cardiologist has been sentenced to at least one year in jail for possessing thousands and thousands of files of child abuse material on his phone, according to new reporting from ABC News in Australia.
During sentencing, the judge described the materials on the cardiologist’s phone as “deviant, distressing and disturbing.”
Andrew Douglas McGavigan, 49, a cardiologist from Adelaide, South Australia, was arrested in December 2020 after police officers raided his home. Back in March, he pleaded guilty to two charges of possessing child abuse materials. Evidence also detailed online conversations the cardiologist had with other people about engaging in sexual activity with children in Thailand.
According to the ABC News report, McGavigan’s lawyers said these behaviors were a result of his depression and feelings of burnout.
The judge said she believed McGavigan was remorseful, but she also said he had “encouraged and added to the abuse of these unfortunate children.”
The full sentence is for three years and four months in jail. The non-parole period, however, is one year.
