Cardiologist, Syrian refugee serves as mentor for high school students
Heval Mohamed Kelli, MD, a cardiology fellow at Emory University and Syrian refugee, is teaching science to high school students, most of whom are also refugees, CNN reports.
Kelli, 33, grew up in Syria before moving to Germany and then arriving in the U.S. in September 2001. Kelli, who didn’t speak English at the time, soon took a job washing dishes at a restaurant to provide financial support for his family.
Kelli told CNN that a heart surgeon and professor at Emory took him under his wing and helped him realize his dream of becoming a doctor. Now, he’s serving as a role model for young students through a program called Young Physicians Initiative that he started in the fall. Kelli partnered with Emory for the initiative, which is a premedical education program for high schoolers.
