Cardiovascular disease: Where the pounds go

The British Heart Foundation estimates that 7 million people in the United Kingdom live with cardiovascular disease. Here is a breakdown of the National Health Service’s expenditures on cardiovascular disease in England.

  • 63.4 percent spent on secondary care
  • 20.9 percent on primary care
  • 5.9 percent on urgent and emergency care
  • 4.5 percent on community care
  • 3.5 percent on administration and facilities
  • 1.6 percent on care in another setting
  • 0.3 percent on health promotion

All and all, the cost of premature deaths, lost productivity, treatment and hospitalizations for cardiovascular diseases totaled almost $29 billion, according to a December 2014 update.
