European Society of Cardiology cancels conference in Turkey
The European Society of Cardiology (ESC) announced it had cancelled the EuroPRevent 2016 conference, which was scheduled for May 5-7 in Istanbul.
“Numerous concerns were expressed by delegates, sponsors, and faculty alike in the past few weeks, and based on the safety risk; we feel this is the most sensible decision to make for everybody's safety and well being,” the ESC said in a news release.
The ESC and European Association for Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation said this was the first time one of their conferences had been cancelled.
In late March, the U.S. announced it would withdraw nearly all family members of U.S. troops and diplomats from Turkey. Since last year, there have been several bombings in Turkey, including two in Istanbul that were linked to Islamic State militants, the Washington Post reported.
