Medtronic buys Italian managed services firm

Medtronic acquired NGC Medical for $350 million, a transaction that will give Medtronic access to cardiovascular managed services in about 30 hospitals in Italy with possible expansion in Europe, Africa and the Mideast.

Medtronic, which held a 30 percent ownership stake in the Novadrate, Italy-based company, will add NGC to its hospital solutions business. In Italy, NGC provides management services for cardiovascular suites, operating rooms and intensive care units. Broader services include infrastructure design and the management of equipment installation.

NGC, which employs about 100 people, will operate as a separate entity.

Medtronic’s hospital solutions arm integrates data, technology and services with the goal of improving efficiency and patient care. Minneapolis-based Medtronic stated in a release that it intends to grow the business in Europe and elsewhere.
