Missouri, Illinois report some of highest rates for heart disease
Missouri and Illinois are among the top states that are home to people with heart disease, reports CBS St. Louis.
Missouri has one of the highest coronary heart disease mortality rates in the country, while Illinois has one of the highest rates for people developing the disease. In both states, it disproportionately affects black Americans.
According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Illinois and Missouri struggle with high rates of heart disease because they already battle higher rates of its major risk factors, including high blood pressure, obesity and diabetes.
