Enrico Giuseppe Ferro, MD

Electrophysiologist and Clinical Investigator at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School
While he is still at the start of his career, Dr. Ferro has already made important contributions at the intersection of clinical practice, academic research, regulatory science, health policy and medical innovation.
First, Enrico is a practicing cardiologist who trained with renowned electrophysiologists and is becoming proficient in the full EP procedural skillset, ranging from ablation to pacemakers/defibrillators and left atrial appendage occlusion.
Second, Enrico has a terrific track record in conducting research that leverages real-world evidence to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of novel cardiovascular drugs, devices and health policies in the U.S. He has authored or co-authored approximately 40 scientific articles. These have been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals, making an important impact on clinical practice. A recent standout is the SAFE-IVC study published in JAMA, of which Enrico was the lead author. This research was conducted in collaboration with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to describe current practice patterns and outcomes associated with the use of inferior vena cava filters.
Third, Enrico served for more than two years as a medical officer for the FDA, where he has become a public health leader by playing an active role in promoting medical innovation that directly benefits patients at the population level. He has worked with multidisciplinary teams at FDA to grant commercial approval for cardiovascular devices, together with post-market surveillance, recalls and manufacturing changes.
Fourth, Enrico has worked in multiple international settings to improve clinical outcomes on a global scale. He conducted important medical work in Peru, Malaysia and South Africa, and was subsequently selected as a co-author to launch the 2021 WHO List of Priority Medical Devices for Cardiovascular Diseases and the 2023 WHO Technical Specifications for Blood Pressure Measuring Devices. These guidelines support the Ministries of Health of WHO member states to increase patient access to medical devices needed to treat cardiovascular disease around the globe.
These achievements demonstrate Dr. Ferro’s unique expertise at the intersection of multiple domains. Few other practicing cardiologists in the world conduct such consequential, rigorous and practice-changing research—all with a deep understanding of the industry, regulatory and policy viewpoints that are needed to deliver medical innovation to the patient bedside.
