J. Hunter Mehaffey, MD

Associate professor and director of research in cardiovascular and thoracic surgery at West Virginia University and the WVU Heart and Vascular Institute

Some physicians spend a career building credentials of the kind that Dr. James Hunter Mehaffey accumulated in his first three years on faculty at West Virginia University. In that period he earned a meritorious promotion from assistant to associate professor. This made him the fastest to achieve that distinction in the history of the department of cardiovascular and thoracic surgery.

Hunter has maintained the blistering pace ever since. Over the last three years, he has authored more than 150 peer-reviewed publications spanning structural cardiology, coronary surgery, atrial fibrillation management and valvular surgery. His PubMed record is not a list of incremental contributions. It is a sustained, high-volume body of work that is shaping clinical practice across four of cardiovascular surgery’s most consequential subspecialties.

As a funded NIH principal investigator and top enroller in multiple clinical trials, Dr. Mehaffey combines the rigor of federally supported science with the hands-on commitment of active trial recruitment. His roles as associate statistical editor for the Journal of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery and editorial board member for Annals of Thoracic Surgery give him a platform to shape not just what research is done but also how the field evaluates and disseminates it.

At 37, Hunter chairs the program committee for the 2027 Society of Thoracic Surgeons Annual Meeting, mentors trainees at WVU and beyond and serves a patient population that has some of the highest cardiovascular disease burden in the nation.

By measurable and verifiable standards, Dr. James Hunter Mehaffey is one of the most accomplished cardiovascular surgeon-scientists of his generation.
