George H.W. Bush’s cardiologist killed in shooting
Former President George H.W. Bush’s cardiologist was killed on July 20 in an apparent bicycle drive-by shooting near the Texas Medical Center (TMC) in Houston.
Houston Police Department Executive Assistant Police Chief Troy Finner confirmed the shooter and Mark Hausknecht, MD, a cardiologist at Houston Methodist, were both cycling near TMC in the morning when Hausknecht passed the shooter who was riding in the other direction. The shooter fired two shots at Hausknecht.
The investigators are still unclear whether the shooting was motive-driven or a random act.
Bush’s spokesperson Jim McGrath issued a statement from the former president who is currently in Kennebunkport, Maine.
"President George HW Bush was deeply saddened by the tragic circumstances surrounding the untimely passing of Dr. Mark Hausknecht, and 41 sends his most sincere condolences to the Hausknecht family, his colleagues at Houston Methodist, and his friends," the statement read. "Mark was a fantastic cardiologist and a good man. I will always be grateful for his exceptional, compassionate care. His family is in our prayers."
