Family of singer Chris Cornell settles malpractice lawsuit with cardiologist
The family of Chris Cornell, the popular singer known primarily for his work with the bands Soundgarden and Audioslave, has settled a malpractice lawsuit with the cardiologist they blamed for Cornell’s death in May 2017. Terms have not been disclosed.
Cornell died by suicide on May 18, 2017. At the time, it was ruled that the drugs found in Cornell’s system “did not contribute to the cause of death.” However, his family filed a lawsuit in November 2018 alleging that Robert Koblin, MD, an internist and cardiologist based in Beverly Hills, California, had overprescribed Cornell medications such as oxycodone without properly examining him.
Rolling Stone detailed the years-long situation in a new report on its website, quoting court documents and a statement written by Koblin’s attorney, James Kjar.
“Dr. Koblin enjoyed a close relationship with Chris and other members of his family,” Kjar said in a statement, as quoted by Rolling Stone. “He cares deeply about his patients and was saddened at the loss of Chris, as he expressed to the family. Dr. Koblin believes that helping the family deal with the grieving process is paramount to any of the legal issues involved in the lawsuit that was filed. Resolution of this case was in the best interests of all parties involved to help everyone obtain closure.”
Rolling Stone also reached out to Cornell’s family for comment but did not hear back.
