Cardiologist back at work after testing positive for Omicron COVID-19 variant
The cardiologist who made headlines after testing positive for the Omicron COVID-19 variant has officially returned to work.
Elad Maor, MD, PhD, a specialist with Sheba Medical Center in Israel, is back on the job less than two weeks after being the country’s first confirmed Omicron case. He believes he was infected while visiting London to attend the PCR London Valves 2021 conference.
The Jerusalem Post interviewed Maor, asking him about his experience. He still feels weaker than normal, he told the publication, and he thinks his symptoms would have been much worse had he not been fully vaccinated.
“The vaccine does not give you full protection,” Maor said. “It protects you from severe disease and death, but not from getting the virus.”
The cardiologist noted that his wife and three children, who are all vaccinated, were never infected. He did stay away from them, in a room by himself, for 10 days to limit any risk of spreading the virus.
“Home isolation is really tough,” he said. “I did not want to get my family infected.”
