Cardiologist’s date rape trial scheduled for March
The 35-year-old cardiologist accused of date raping 13 women was arraigned in a Denver courthouse on Friday, Oct. 6, and entered a plea of not guilty.
Stephen Matthews faces a total of 51 felony charges for his alleged crimes. According to a new update from CBS News, he pleaded not guilty during the arraignment, and his trial was scheduled to begin on March 4. He was then returned to the jail where he is being held on a $5 million bond.
Additional details about the case against cardiologist Stephen Matthews:
In April, Matthews was initially charged with three counts of sexual assault after a woman came forward with allegations that she had been drugged while at his house on a date, only to wake up hours later with no memory of what had happened. Many other victims then stepped forward with similar stories about Matthews, and he agreed not to practice medicine during the investigation.
When a sex crimes detective with the Denver Police Department took the stand at a preliminary hearing, she described the alleged crimes detailed in this case as “horrible and atrocious.”
