1 in 7 surgeries deemed cardiovascular procedures

Cardiology-related procedures dominated a federal list of surgeries at short-stay hospitals. The list compiled by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was based on discharges in 2010.

Surgical procedures performed at hospitals in 2010 totaled 51.4 million. All in all, cardiovascular surgical procedures accounted for almost 7.5 million of the total.

Here is a breakdown of the most common procedures:

  • Arteriography and angiocardiography using contrast material: 2.4 million
  • Cesarean section: 1.3 million
  • Endoscopy of small intestine with or without biopsy: 1.1 million
  • Diagnostic ultrasound: 1.1 million
  • Cardiac catheterizations: 1 million
  • Total knee replacement: 719,000
  • Reduction of fracture: 671,000
  • Balloon angioplasty of coronary artery or coronary atherectomy: 500,000
  • Endoscopy of large intestine with or without biopsy: 499,000
  • Hysterectomy: 498,000
  • Insertion of coronary artery stent: 454,000
  • CABG: 395,000
  • Total hip replacement: 332,000
