Pharmacies to offer rivaroxaban starter packs

Janssen Pharmaceuticals plans to make a starter pack of the anticoagulant rivaroxaban available in pharmacies in October. The starter pack is designed to simplify dosing for patients at risk of deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism during the first 30 days of treatment.

The FDA approved rivaroxaban (Xarelto), a Factor Xa inhibitor, in late 2012 for the treatment of deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism and to reduce the risk of recurrences. The starter pack provides a 15mg dose taken twice daily for the first 21 days, followed by once-daily doses of 20mg through the remaining portion of the 30-day treatment.
