Cardiologist Galen Wagner dies at age 76
Galen Wagner, MD, a cardiologist and founding member of the Duke Clinical Research Institute, died July 13 after a long illness. He was 76.
Wagner, who lived in Durham, North Carolina, earned his undergraduate and medical degrees from Duke. He also completed his residency and cardiology fellowship at the University.
During his career, he was the director of Duke Cardiac Care, director of Duke’s cardiology fellowship program, Duke’s assistant dean of medical education and founder and director of Duke’s Cooperative Cardiovascular Society, a consortium of current and former Duke cardiology fellows, researchers from other colleges and industry sponsors.
In addition, he was an author of eight books and 701 published manuscripts and was the editor in chief of the Journal of Electrocardiology.
“Dr. Wagner may be remembered most for his love of mentoring young people,” Nancy Andrews, MD, PhD, the dean of Duke’s school of medicine, said in a message to faculty and staff. “He was well known for bringing out the best in others, serving as a guide for high school students, undergraduate students, medical students, residents, fellows, and junior and senior faculty.”
