The Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) Research & Education (R&E) Foundation awarded the 2013 Toshiba America Medical Systems/RSNA Research Seed Grant to Soterios Gyftopolous, M.D. and two 2013 Toshiba America Medical Systems/RSNA Research Resident Grants to Daniel S. Chow, M.D. and H. Benjamin Harvey, M.D., J.D. These grants are made possible by Toshiba America Medical Systems’ support of the RSNA R&E Foundation.
The 2013 Toshiba America Medical Systems/RSNA Research Seed Grant provides $40,000 for a one-year project to test hypotheses and obtain pilot data in preparation for major grant applications.
Soterios Gyftopolous, M.D., New York University School of Medicine, will investigate rotator cuff tears in the preoperative and postoperative setting. Data from this study could lead to early intervention or a change in rehabilitation in the repairs that are on the path to failure.
The 2013 Toshiba America Medical Systems/RSNA Research Resident Grant is designed to give residents an opportunity to gain insight into a research career by providing dedicated time for research projects. The grant award is $30,000 for a one-year study.
Daniel S. Chow, M.D., Columbia University Medical Center, will study in-vivo optical imaging in an acute stroke model in rats, with the goal of examining the relationship between cerebral blood flow and metabolic demands in the development and evolution of the ischemic penumbra. A long term goal of this research is to combine this with simultaneous diffusion- and perfusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging to develop and refine imaging markers to better predict outcomes and guide treatment.
H. Benjamin Harvey, M.D., J.D., Massachusetts General Hospital, will evaluate an antenatal ultrasound screening program implemented in under-resourced regions of rural Kenya in an effort to reduce maternal and child mortality rates in Sub-Saharan Africa.
The RSNA R&E Foundation is awarding a total of 83 grants in 2013 valued at more than $3 million.
