A recent survey from Merritt Hawkins, a Dallas-based search firm, included updated demographic and salary data on a wide variety of specialties, both invasive and non-invasive among them.
The “2017 Review of Physician and Advanced Practitioner Recruiting Incentives” is based on the 3,287 permanent physician and advanced practitioner search assignments that Merritt Hawkins’ and AMN Healthcare’s sister physician staffing companies (Kendall & Davis and Staff Care) had ongoing or were engaged to conduct during the 12-month period from April 1, 2016, to March 31, 2017.
Notable points for cardiologists include:
- The average salary for non-invasive cardiologists dipped to $428,000 in 2016-2017 from $493,000 in the previous year’s survey.
- The average salary for invasive cardiologists increased 3.3 percent, to 563,000 this year from 545,000 in the 2015-2016 survey.
- One-third of active physicians will be 65 or older in the next 10 years. Currently, 54 percent of cardiologists are 55 or older, and 21 percent are 65 or older.
- Cardiology was the most request medical specialty 62 times, a large increase from the average of 35 in the previous four studies.
- According to 2013 data, the most current available, mental health overtook heart disease for the largest share of overall spending.
