GLP-1 Drugs

GLP-1 receptor agonists mimic a natural hormone in the body to help regulate blood sugar and minimize certain cravings. Originally developed to treat diabetes, these drugs are now regularly used for weight loss. They have also been linked to significant reductions in certain cardiovascular outcomes, including heart attack and stroke.

These drugs represent one of modern healthcare’s biggest trends. Two popular injectable examples are semaglutide, sold by Novo Nordisk under the brand names Wegovy and Ozempic, and tirzepatide, a dual GIP/GLP-1 receptor agonist sold by Eli Lilly and Company under the brand names Zepbound and Mounjaro. For patients hoping to avoid injections, there are also a semaglutide pill from Novo Nordisk and orforglipron, a GLP-1 pill from Eli Lilly and Company.
