Defense awards $67M for airworthy defibrillators

The Department of Defense awarded contracts topping a combined $67 million to two companies for airworthy defibrillators under its war-stopper funds.

Zoll Medical will receive $39.8 million under a five-year contract. Zoll manufactures the Propaq MD, an airworthy defibrillator that allows for monitoring patients during long transports. The device has been cleared by the FDA and includes a night vision mode.

Philips Healthcare’s $27.4 million, five-year contract also is for airworthy defibrillators. Philips makes the HeartStart MRx Monitor/Defibrillator, which has been certified by the U.S. Army as airworthy and received a Safe-to-Fly certificate from the Air Force. It combines defibrillation and monitoring technology.

Zoll Medical in Chelmsford, Mass., and Philips Healthcare is in Andover, Mass.
