CMS finalizes cancellation of cardiac bundles
CMS announced Nov. 30 it has finalized the cancellation of mandatory cardiac bundled payment programs, among other changes.
“While CMS continues to believe that bundled payment models offer opportunities to improve quality and care coordination while lowering spending, we believe that focusing on developing different bundled payment models and engaging more providers is the best way to drive health system change while minimizing burden and maintaining access to care,” CMS Administrator Seema Verma said in a press release. “We anticipate announcing new voluntary payment bundles soon.”
Cardiovascular Business reported in August on CMS’s plans to axe mandatory cardiac bundles, which were scheduled to begin in 2018. The elimination of the payment model removes a way for practices to qualify for a 5 percent bonus under the Advanced Alternative Payment Model introduced by the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act.
