Long Island cardiologist sentenced to 5 years in prison
A cardiologist in Long Island was sentenced on Jan. 31 to five years in prison on arson, weapon, drug and conspiracy charges, Newsday reports.
The newspaper reported that Anthony Moschetto, MD, pleaded guilty in October to first-degree criminal possession of a weapon, criminal sale of a drug prescription, third-degree arson and conspiracy to commit an assault.
Authorities alleged that Moschetto attempted to have a rival doctor, Martin Handler, MD, beaten into a coma or killed and burn down Handler’s office, but his plea deal did not include the murder allegation. The newspaper said that the arson in February 2015 caused $65,000 in damages to Handler's office.
Handler testified last year that Moschetto worked for him for two decades until late 2014.
The district attorney’s office wanted a 12-year sentence for Moschetto, according to Newsday.
