Cardiologist accused of date rape by multiple women agrees not to practice medicine during investigation

A Denver cardiologist accused of sexually assaulting multiple women has agreed to not practice medicine while under investigation.

Stephen Matthews, 35, was initially arrested and charged with three counts of sexual assault back in April after a woman came forward and said she blacked out after meeting him for brunch and going back to his house. She was allegedly sexually assaulted during that time, waking up hours later at her own home. When Matthews arrived in court for a preliminary hearing, however, he was arrested again for sexually assaulting nine additional women, bringing the total number of alleged victims to 10.

Now, according to an update from CBS News Colorado, Matthews has reached an agreement with the Colorado medical board that says he will not practice medicine during the investigation into his actions. The agreement, technically not an admission of guilt, is expected to stay in effect until “there is a final disposition in Matthews’ case or other disciplinary action is taken.”

The first time Matthews was arrested, he posted a $50,000 bond. This time, however, CBS Colorado reported that he “is being held without bond at the Denver jail.”
