Cardiologist caught in undercover sting pleads guilty to sex crimes involving a minor

Jeffrey Scott Kunz, a 47-year-old cardiologist who served in the U.S. Army, has pleaded guilty to second-degree child molestation and attempted sexual abuse of a minor. He will now be registered as a sex offender.

The Tacoma News Tribune delivered an in-depth report on the topic, noting that Kunz was first arrested after being identified during an undercover sting operation carried out by the Washington State Patrol’s Missing and Exploited Children Task Force. In January 2023, Kunz communicated via text with an undercover officer posing as a 13-year-old girl, agreeing to pay $300 to meet in person. When he arrived at the chosen location, agents put him in handcuffs.

Kunz was working as a cardiologist with the MultiCare Health System at the time of his arrest. He resigned from his position.

Kunz is scheduled to be sentenced in November. He will remain in custody until that time, and prosecutors and the defense have already recommended a 31-month prison sentence.
