AHA honors three longtime volunteers with the Gold Heart Award
Two cardiologists and a retired lawyer received the American Heart Association (AHA) Gold Heart award for their contributions to the association and medicine during a June 21 banquet in Dallas.
The winners were Emelia J. Benjamin, MD, William H. Roach Jr. and Gordon F. Tomaselli, MD.
Benjamin, a cardiologist and professor at Boston University, was honored for developing and mentoring early career investigators. She has volunteered with the AHA since 1992 and was the Council of Functional Genomics and Translational Biology’s chairperson from 2010 to 2012. She still is a member of the council and also serves as an associate editor for Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association. In addition, she is the chairperson of the AHA’s statistics committee through next year.
Roach Jr., a retired partner with the McDermott, Will and Emery law firm in Chicago, was the AHA’s secretary-treasurer in 2009-10 and chairman in 2011-12.
Tomaselli, chief of the division of cardiology at John Hopkins University in Baltimore, was the AHA’s president in 2011-12.
