Interventional cardiologists with Henry Ford Health performed the historic procedure on an 85-year-old patient who had been experiencing worsening symptoms for a full year.

In addition to the hefty fine, the New York physician has agreed to relinquish ownership of his cardiology practice after exchanging kickbacks for PET and SPECT referrals for more than a decade.

The 35-year-old cardiologist faces a total of 51 felony charges. He is scheduled to be arraigned on Oct. 6.

Access to cannabis is skyrocketing across the United States, but much more research is still needed on its long-term side effects. 

"We know that the cardiovascular community is ready for an independent, self-governed entity, and we are proud to develop this new board with cardiologists and cardiology organizations at the helm," ACC President B. Hadley Wilson, MD, said in a statement.

“Our results beg the question of whether pre-TAVR baseline coronary angiography is even necessary,” researchers wrote in the American Journal of Cardiology.

Cardiologist Martha Gulati, MD, lead author of the 2021 chest pain guidelines, explained how the document may have contributed to the rise of cardiac CT. "These guidelines have made it harder for people to push back and say you don't need this test," she said. 

The new ranking, based on extensive survey data gathered by Newsweek, includes a total of 150 hospitals. Seven of the top 10 are located in the United States.
