Family of professional baseball player files wrongful death lawsuit, says ECG results were mishandled
The family of Ryan Costello, a professional baseball player who died in 2019, has filed a wrongful death lawsuit that alleges his healthcare providers failed to diagnose and treat a serious cardiac condition. Physician David Olson, MD, and the Infinite Health Collaborative medical group are listed in the lawsuit as defendants.
According to a report from Florida Politics, Costello underwent an electrocardiogram in March 2019. The examination showed signs of Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome—the letters “WPW” were even allegedly written on the results—but no diagnosis was ever made.
Costello continued playing, traveling to New Zealand to play in the Australian Baseball League, and died soon after his arrival. He was 23 years old.
Costello was a member of the Minnesota Twins organization at the time of his death. The Twins are not listed as a defendant in the lawsuit, but the reporting from Florida Politics suggests the team’s role is still being evaluated by the family’s lawyers.
