VIDEO: Vascular imaging applications for CT beyond the heart
Brian Ghoshhajra MD, Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography (SCCT) president and division chief, cardiovascular imaging, Massachusetts General Hospital and associate professor of radiology, Harvard, explains the vascular imaging sessions at SCCT 2022 that went beyond the usual coronaries and structural heart evaluations.
The SCCT annual meeting is composed of about 50% radiologists and 50% cardiologists, and the two specialties share their expertise in numerous areas during sessions each year.
"We often talk about the coronary arteries because that is what brought us all together, but we can't forget you get to the coronaries by going through other vessels, and there are a lot of interesting disease processes we can help with in imaging," Ghoshhajra explained. "I found a lot of energy around the noncoronary sessions."
This included sessions focused on diseases of the aorta, congenital heart disease, spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD), fibromuscular dysplasia, pulmonary embolism (PE), and how CT is used in vascular and electrophysiology procedures.
"While the noncardiac imaging is often done by the radiologists, it is indeed a shared specialty. It is very important that both radiologists and nonradiologists alike both need to be aware of these diagnoses and how to best image them," he said.
