Documentary highlights robotic-assisted PCI
Corindus Vascular Robotics released a documentary on Sept. 16 to promote its CorPath System, the only FDA-cleared device for robotic-assisted PCI.
In the documentary, titled “Robotics Reducing the Burden of a Life in the Cath Lab,” interventional cardiologist Vijay S. Iver, MD, discusses how the CorPath System is an alternative to wearing lead apparel to protect against radiation.
Dr. Iver, who is the medical director of structural heart interventions at Gates Vascular Institute in Buffalo, NY, said he has had multiple spinal disc herniations and four surgeries related to wearing lead-lined apparel in the cath lab.
Risks associated with radiation exposure in the cath lab include musculoskeletal injuries, cataracts, cancer, brain tumors and thyroid diseases, according to a Corindus news release.
The CorPath System helps interventional cardiologists in performing PCIs and includes a bedside unit and an interventional, radiation-shielded cockpit that controls the movement of guidewires and balloon/stent catheters.
