AHA's CPR theme song helps save a life in New York

A catchy tune is the reason one New York subway worker is alive today.

On October 7, Monique Brathwaite collapsed on the third rail that powers the No. 1 train under West 154th Street in Harlem, New York, with 600 volts of electricity. Her coworkers assumed she was dead until they saw her move.

It was then that a co-worker remembered the life-saving advice from the American Heart Association to perform chest compressions to the tune "Stayin' Alive," the Bee Gees famous disco song with the ideal pace around the AHA's recommended 100 to 120 beats per minute. David Martinez recalled watching a video produced by the AHA teaching hands-only compression.

By the time firefighters arrived, Brathwaite had convulsed and opened her eyes.
