New app aims to protect veterans' hearts
Many military veterans who have suffered heart failure cycle in and out of hospitals because they can’t or won’t follow the strict diet and exercise regime necessary to keep them healthy.
Lois Freeman, a nurse at the Baltimore VA Medical Center, developed an app to help veterans track their diet, weight and exercise regimens. The Department of Veterans Affairs provided $1 million in development funding for the project.
"There's always a need to innovate and there's always a need for frontline employees to have an outlet," said Kristopher Teague, who manages grassroots innovation for the VA. "These are the folks on the front lines that care for veterans every day. We should be asking them, 'What can we do to help you do your job better?'"
