AHA, NFL offer free virtual class for students during Super Bowl week
The American Heart Association (AHA), the National Football League (NFL) and Discovery Education will offer a free virtual class on Jan. 31 to teach students the science behind cardiovascular and strength exercises that NFL players use.
The hour-long class takes place during the week of the Super Bowl, which is being held on Feb. 5 in Houston.
The AHA said in a news release that Houston Texan linebacker Whitney Mercilus and defensive end Christian Covington and Northwestern University associate professor Mercedes Carnethon, PhD, will teach the students and give them a look at the Texans’ practice facility and Houston’s Health Museum.
In 2006, the AHA and NFL launched the NFL PLAY 60 Challenge, a four-week program aimed at encouraging students to have 60 minutes of physical activity per day. The program includes interactive lesson plans, videos featuring Washington Redskins linebacker Ryan Kerrigan and family activities. Discovery Education is also involved with the NFL PLAY 60 Challenge.
