Cardiac Imaging

While cardiac ultrasound is the widely used imaging modality for heart assessments, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and nuclear imaging are also used and are often complimentary, each offering specific details about the heart other modalities cannot. For this reason the clinical question being asked often determines the imaging test that will be used.

Arizona Heart Foundation expands student education with nine Toshiba ultrasound units

The Arizona Heart Foundation enhanced its School of Cardiac & Vascular Ultrasound by installing eight Toshiba AplioTM 500 ultrasound systems and one ViamoTM ultrasound to educate students with the most advanced technology. The school will use Toshiba’s ultrasound systems for its 18-month cardiovascular ultrasound program. The potential for research remains priority for the foundation as well as the school.

Coronary angiography pioneer Sven Paulin dies

Sven Paulin, MD, PhD, a pioneer in coronary angiography and a founding fellow and past president of the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions, died Jan. 10. The Boston Globe published this obituary.

Creatine MRI may spot heart damage earlier

Measuring specific creatine-related molecules in the body using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may help detect damaged myocardial tissue earlier, according to a study published online Jan. 12 in Nature Medicine.

ESC to cardiologists: Bone up on radiation’s risks

Radiation in cardiovascular imaging is not the enemy; uninformed and unwise use is. So proposed authors of a European Society of Cardiology (ESC) position paper published Jan. 9 in the European Heart Journal.

Can-do Cath Labs: Improving PCI Outcomes & Efficiency

Improving efficiencies and patient outcomes in the cath lab can go hand in hand.

LGE-CMR may help guide ICD decisions

Late gadolinium enhancement cardiac magnetic resonance (LGE-CMR) imaging offers a powerful tool for risk stratifying patients with non-ischemic cardiomyopathy, a meta-analysis published online Dec. 20 in Circulation Cardiovascular Imaging determined. LGE-CMR may provide additional information for selecting patients in need of implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs).

Accreditation for Cardiovascular Excellence achieves record-breaking cardiac cath lab applications

Rounding out a very successful year, Accreditation for Cardiovascular Excellence (ACE) reports they have reached record-breaking numbers of accreditation applications for cardiac cath labs in 2013. “Accreditation applications have more than doubled since 2012,” said Mary Heisler, RN, BA, ACE Executive Director. “More labs are realizing the importance of accountable metrics and know it’s time to get started on the quality journey with ACE.”
