European Society of Cardiology shares new guidance on COVID-related cardiovascular disease
The European Society of Cardiology (ESC) has released a new two-part guidance on how to diagnose and treat cardiovascular disease (CVD) in COVID-19 patients.
The first part of the guidance focuses on the relationship between CVD and COVID-19, providing insights designed to help specialists diagnose cardiovascular conditions in patients with a confirmed infection. The second part, on the other hand, examines the management and treatment of these patients.
Both parts of the document have been published in full in European Heart Journal.
“This comprehensive review is not a formal guideline but rather a document that provides a summary of current knowledge and guidance to practicing clinicians managing patients with CVD and COVID-19,” wrote the task force behind the document. “The recommendations are mainly the result of observations and personal experience from healthcare providers.”
The authors also noted that these recommendations may change over time.
“The present publication provides a summary of the guidance until February 2021,” they wrote. “Therefore, the information provided here may be subject to change with increasing knowledge, evidence from prospective studies, and changes in the pandemic. Likewise, the guidance provided in the document should in no way interfere with recommendations provided by local and national health care authorities.”
