‘Everyone is shocked’: Celebrated cardiologist dies from COVID-19 complications
Eugene “Gene” J. Sayfie, MD, a veteran cardiologist from Miami, died from complications related to COVID-19 on May 23. He was 85 years old.
Sayfie started practicing cardiology back in 1960, according to a thorough obituary shared by the Miami Herald. He was still treating patients before his COVID-19 diagnosis.
“He wasn’t even sick,” Stephanie Sayfie-Aagaard, Sayfie’s daughter, said in the obituary. “Dad was taking care of everybody. Everyone is shocked.”
Sayfie served patients at numerous facilities, including the University of Miami Hospital, University of Miami Leonard Miller School of Medicine, Mount Sinai Medical Center and Aventura Hospital. He was also chairman of the Miami Heart Institute’s department of cardiovascular diseases. His most recent role involved working as a concierge doctor of cardiology and internal medicine at Mount Sinai in Miami Beach.
The obituary detailed how beloved Sayfie was among his colleagues and patients. The University of Miami Miller School of Miller even honored him by opening the Eugene J. Sayfie Pavilion for Excellence in Patient Care.
