Heart patients have cause to be hypervigilant about COVID-19
Of COVID-19 patients who develop serious heart complications, most don’t see this problem until late in the disease’s progression. However, some are turning up with extensive heart inflammation at the outset.
So notes Haider Warraich, MD, a Boston cardiologist who has taken to the pages of the Washington Post to explain why the novel coronavirus is particularly dangerous to all people living with heart disease.
Pointing out that cardiac injury has been present in 59% of COVID-19 patients who died vs. only 1% of survivors, Warraich reminds that heart disease is still the No. 1 cause of death in the U.S.
And, as he puts it, heart disease “is not ready to give up that distinction any time soon. With the right precautions and with heightened vigilance, we can try to ensure that COVID-19 doesn’t help increase that toll.”
