Society of Thoracic Surgeons elects UPenn's Bavaria as President
The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) elected Joseph E. Bavaria, MD, as president on Jan. 25 during its annual meeting in Phoenix, Ariz.
Bavaria, the director of the thoracic aortic surgery program at the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine, was the STS’s first vice president before his recent election.
Bavaria received a bachelor of science degree in chemical engineering and a medical degree from Tulane University in New Orleans and completed his surgical internship and residency at the hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
“I am honored to follow in the footsteps of some of the greatest cardiothoracic surgeons who have led our specialty and look forward to my tenure as STS President,” Bavaria said in a news release. “I hope to spend my year as President focusing on expanding the STS National Database to include more cardiothoracic surgery procedures; I also plan to execute educational opportunities globally.”
