Leaching from packaging prompts recall
Novartis is recalling physician samples of medications used to treat hypertension and cholesterol because of contamination from a chemical used in packaging.
The FDA issued a Class II recall on physician sample bottles of the blood pressure pharmaceuticals Diovan (valsartan), Exforge (amlodipine and valsartan) and Tekturna (aliskiren) because tests showed the presence of a photocuring agent in the tablets.
The agent, Darocur 1173, is used in inks on shrink-wrap sleeves.
