Vascular & Endovascular

This channel includes news on non-coronary vascular disease and therapies. These include peripheral artery disease (PAD), abdominal and thoracic aortic aneurysm (AAA and TAA), aortic dissection, pulmonary embolism (PE), critical limb ischemia (CLI), carotid artery and stroke interventions, venous interventions, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), and interventional radiology therapies. The focus on most of these therapies is minimally invasive, catheter-based procedures performed in a cath lab.

Medtronic obtains CE Mark for vascular stent

Medtronic has received CE Mark and initiated an international launch of its Complete SE (self-expanding) vascular stent for use in the lower extremities, specifically, the superficial femoral arteries and proximal popliteal arteries.

ISET: EVAR provides survival but not long-term mortality benefit

Less invasive endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) offers an improved survival benefit for patients with ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysms compared with surgical repair, according to study results presented Jan. 22 at the International Symposium on Endovascular Therapy (ISET) in Miami Beach, Fla. But long-term mortality remained high in both groups.

Covidien scores CE Mark for EverFlex peripheral stent, delivery system

Covidien has received CE Mark approval for its EverFlex self-expanding peripheral stent with Entrust delivery system.

ISET: Combination treatment for DVT appears efficacious

The results of a Phase II trial exploring the efficacy of combination treatment in dissolving deep venous thromboli (DVT) suggest that the procedure resolves DVT so quickly that treatment may someday be handled on an outpatient basis, Robert A. Lookstein, MD, told Cardiovascular Business. He presented the results Jan. 21 at the International Symposium on Endovascular Therapy (ISET) in Miami Beach, Fla.

FDA clears thrombectomy system

Rex Medical has received 510(k) clearance from the FDA for its Cleaner15 rotational thrombectomy system, with an indication for mechanical declotting of occluded native vessel dialysis fistulae and synthetic dialysis access grafts.

EU approves Gore's updated Excluder AAA Endoprosthesis

W. L. Gore & Associates (Gore) has received CE Mark for the new lower profile 31 mm diameter trunk-ipsilateral leg and 32 mm aortic extender components of the Gore Excluder AAA Endoprosthesis for treatment of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs).

Selective D-dimer testing for DVT safe, efficient

In a randomized, multicenter controlled trial, researchers found that limiting D-dimer testing to outpatients with a low or moderate clinical pretest probability of developing deep venous thrombosis (DVT), and adjusting the threshold to denote a positive result, did not lead to additional missed diagnoses.

Let conference season begin

This weekend ushers in the 25th anniversary of the International Symposium on Endovascular Therapy in Miami Beach and launches the 2013 conference season in earnest.
