Cardiologist Benedict Glover, MD, former head of electrophysiology at Sunnybrook Hospital, was accused of sexual misconduct by a former trainee at Sunnybrook in Toronto, Canada, in 2021. The incident remains unresolved, and the trainee filed a lawsuit against both Sunnybrook and the University of Toronto for failing to act.
Now, according to an in-depth report from The Globe and Mail, Glover has sued that trainee for defamation, claiming she “invented these allegations for the improper purpose of coercing settlement monies.”
The alleged misconduct occurred at a 2021 gathering at Glover’s home. Glover has denied the trainee’s accusations. He resigned from his position in March 2022.
Both Sunnybrook Hospital and the University of Toronto have said the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) is looking into the accusation. The CPSO website does reference the allegations and Glover’s resignation, but it also indicates Sunnybrook Hospital and the University of Toronto are the ones still investigating the incident.
Glover’s lawyer, when asked for comment about the ongoing situation, told The Globe and Mail that the cardiologist “will not litigate this issue in the press.”
