Police rescue kidnapped cardiologist after deadly gunfight

A cardiologist abducted in Nigeria is now out of harm’s way after being rescued by police.

Vincent Uhegbu Maduka, is a specialist at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital. He was abducted on Dec. 9.

According to a report from Daily Trust, shots were fired during the rescue—and some of the kidnappers died. Others survived but were arrested.

After the abduction was made public, the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) announced it would go on strike to urge the doctor’s kidnappers to release him. Now that he has been rescued, the NMA has said it is calling off that strike.
