From heart pumps to politics: Former medtech CEO launches campaign to be the governor of Massachusetts
Michael Minogue spent nearly two decades as the chairman, president and CEO of Abiomed, and now he’s running to be the next governor of Massachusetts.
“Too many Massachusetts families are struggling,” Minogue said as he officially announced his campaign. “Cost of living, including taxes, is driving people and businesses out of the state. Working families struggle to pay their bills: energy, taxes and fees are too expensive, traffic has never been worse, and housing is unaffordable. Young people can’t afford to start their lives here; seniors can’t afford to stay.”
Minogue points to his years of success with Abiomed as evidence that he is an effective leader. He was there for the rise of the company’s Impella heart pumps, for example, and Abiomed was taking home more than $1 billion in annual sales by the time it was acquired by Johnson & Johnson for $16.6 billion in 2022.
Minogue also spent more than 11 years with GE HealthCare and served in the U.S. Army during Operation Desert Storm.
In his announcement, Minogue said his priorities are lowering taxes, making the state a more attractive destination for businesses and investing heavily in education.
“I promise to put the people of Massachusetts first just like we put patients first at Abiomed,” he said in a separate announcement.
Minogue is running as a Republican candidate. Governor Maura Healey, a Democrat, has been in the position since 2023. She won with 64% of the vote, defeating Republican Geoff Diehl.
